Behavioral Interview Question:
Describe an instance where your communication skills allowed you to make a meaningful difference to a situation.
Applicant Answer:
In my role as Administrative Coordinator, my staff comprised of twenty seven students. The different class schedules of these students implied that they could not be gathered together for a meeting. In order to be able to communicate with all of them, we set up a webpage on which I could post announcements for them. We made it mandatory for every desk assistant to check the webpage at the start of his shift on a daily basis. I also ensured that emails were sent out to all Desk Assistants to keep them informed for everything. A potentially difficult situation arose when a last minute summer camp chose to check in with only a single day’s notice. Although we had no staff scheduled for them beforehand, we were able to manage just fine as we were able to get the staff in place. This was made possible by simply sending out an email and posting on our webpage. This use of technology enabled us to have our desk assistants in place and the establishment was staffed as per requirements.

During the course of my employment at the reception of an apartment complex, an issue arose when a tenant alleged that he had slipped the rent under the locked door of our office on a holiday. I suggested to my manager that we should have a clear warning sign at the reception and on the office door indicating that rent will only be accepted either as a bank transaction or in person. The management agreed to my proposal and the problem never arose again.

Ans 1 - Yes, the situation was described. The applicant was engaged in explaining a different approach taken by him to communicate with others in the team and how it proved beneficial. The applicant started communicating through a different channel of communication which the others were more proned or even mandate to use. The results were positive as the applicant was able to handle a crisis occurence with no damage.
Ans 2 - Yes, the situation was described. The applicant was again engaged in explaining a different approach taken by him to indirectly communicate and set up a proper procedure for payment of rent and how it would avoid allegations of tenants making the payment without the management receiving it. The applicant made an indirect communication and a general policy on how to make rent payments. The results were positive as the policy was adhered to.
