Question

Powermat, Inc., has encountered difficulty over the last few years filling its middle management positions. The company, which manufactures and sells complex machinery, is organized into six semiautonomous manufacturing departments. Top management believes it is necessary for the manager of these departments to make many complex and technical decisions. Therefore, the company originally recruited strictly from within. However, it soon found that employees elevated to middle management often lacked the skills necessary to discharge their duties.

A decision was made then to recruit from the outside, particularly from colleges with good industrial managements programs. Through the services of a professional recruiter, the company developed a pool of well-qualified industrial management graduates. Several were hired and placed in lower mismanagement positions a preparation for middle management jobs. Within two years, all these people had left the company.

Management reverted to its former policy of promoting from within and experienced basically the same rsults as before. Faced with imminent retirement of employess in several key middle management positions, the company decide to call in a consultant for solutions

1. Is recruiting the problem in this company?

2. If you were the consultant, what would you recommend?

Explanation / Answer

1) By going through the above case, we can say that there was a problem in recruitment partially. When there are internal shifts in the positions or when recruiting people from external source a person should meet certain criteria to fill the position especially when it is a management level. People can be very successful when they are promoted to the next level in the same Organization as they will be knowing every spec of the company's policy. But only when the right people are chosen. And when the Company fills the position from the external source one should practical experience as well as theoritical experience. That too for a managerial level.

2) If i was a consultant, the first and foremost the Company should do is to train the employees properly. When a person is chosen from the lower level to the Managerial level within the same Organization, he/she should be trained by the skilled Manager for some days inroder to understand the managerial level activities and responsibilities only then one will be in a position to take apt decision at the right time. Until and unless one is trained to take deal with the things in a right way he/she will not get succeded. And on the other hand when the person is recruited from the external source he/she should have minimum experience at the managerial level activities and critical thinking. And once they are recruited even they have to be trained to understand the whereabouts of the company. Then it will make some difference and one will be in a position to take the right step and apt decision.
