Question
First, review the sections on Research Ethics and the subsection on Testing a Hypothesis under the section Research Methods in chapter one of your text in order to familiarize yourself with sociological experiments. Then, begin this assignment by choosing a folkway to violate. Examples include (and there are many folkways to choose from): wearing the other gender’s clothing, speaking a foreign language to an English speaker, sitting with a stranger at a restaurant, and eating dinner with your hands. Be sure to ask your facilitator if you are unsure if the norm you choose to violate is appropriate for this assignment. Here is an example of a norm violation for you to watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlVsj5vLu_U.
Violate your chosen folkway (not a law) in at least one situation and document it with pictures, video, and/or notes. Be sure to note how you feel when you violate the norm, as well as other people’s reactions to the violation. If you do not receive adequate data (reactions) in one situation, try it again in another.
Write an organized essay that explores the norm you violated, how you felt while being deviant, and the reactions you received while you were violating the norm. You should then analyze the experience, including the theories of deviance presented in the text. Your paper should also include an introduction with a thesis and a conclusion that reviews all main points you present.
Explanation / Answer
Norm violation is a sociological experiment where the reaction of people are analyzed when any normal social norms has been violated. There are many ways that a common socially accepted trend has been violated and how it impacts the person who has suffered such violation. It is also used to analyze that how different people react to different norm violations activity meaning by how they respond to such situations. They may become conscious or violent or ignore it.
In this experiment we have taken a case of personal space norm violation. In this, the experimenter will forcibly goes into another person‘s personal space and observe that how they are going to react towards such action. In this case the deviant moved randomly to a table where two couples were sited and doing chat. The deviant sits with them and kept himself busy in his own work. The couples become little conscious and sifted to opposite sides giving the person space. After some time, the couples get relaxed and start chatting with deviant. As an experimenter, It feels really awkward to involve with a unknown group of person who are busy in their work. The experiment clearly shows that the person or group of persons whose personal space has been violated becomes conscious when encountered with a complete stranger. This is an example of social strain typology. In this case conflict theory of deviance can also be applied as normally people are not acceptable of some peoples who acted strangely or doesn’t follow social norms. In our experiment, the response of couple may get change if he deviant belongs to a class that was not acceptable w widely in a society. Structural functionalism can also be applicable in this experiment as reaction of couples may also depend upon the culture of the society to which they belong and how comfortable are they in accepting those deviances.
