You have been meeting on a team for the past couple of weeks, and while you really get along well with your teammates, it is clear that very little “work” is getting done at these meetings. The other members enjoy spending time with one another, but with the deadline only three weeks away, you are concerned that the team will have to pull an “all-nighter” to get the project done, and even then, it may not be as good as it could be.
How could this situation have been avoided? What approaches to resolving this conflict are appropriate?

This situation cold have been avoided by breaking the project into Work breakdown structure and subsequently by using planning, tracking and monitoring tools such as Gantt Chart, CPM/PERT, Earned Value Analysis (EVA). Project manager and sponsor could have monitored the project's progress on regular interval, using EVA and Gantt Chart. This would have ensure that project tasks were completed as per the specified deadlines and any variances would be documented with reasons. This would have pushed deeper accountability of team members and ensured no loafing around by the team members.
Collaborative approach is appropriate to resolving this conflict. The project manager should enforce the team members to collaborate and expedite and finish their respective tasks as per schedule.
