a) What best practises are being used?
b) What is being done (if anything) to recruit a more diverse workforce?
Explanation / Answer
a. The company with an exemplary employer branding is Apple Inc. Apple clearly defines what it means to be an employee of the organization, what are the employee traits it is looking for and how the organization is the perfect place to work. It describes its employees as "the crazy ones, the round pegs in a square hole, one who sees and does differently". Apple describes their employees as being capable of being forces of change, with the ability of pushing the human race forward. This description is a very good description and enables Apple to attract all creative people in the field of information technology.
Walmart is the company that requires improvement in terms of employer branding. The company has a negative perception in the eyes of potential applicants. It has been in the press in the past for wrong reasons like withholding wages of its employees. Also, unlike Apple, Walmart is not able to create a sense of belonging. The career site of Walmart says that its employees will collaborate with other employees and add value to the lives of the customers. What Walmart is not doing is defining which standards sets its apart as an employer. Apple has been able to do it.
b. All the three companies - Apple, Procter and Gamble (P&G) and Walmart have videos in YouTube touching topics like - careers in that organization, how to apply etc. P&G has videos for different departments like manufacturing careers, marketing careers etc.
c. The companies have aggressively used and are using social media to support employer branding. These companies have a career page in Facebook. These companies also make use of Linkedin to describe the job profile, define the organization and what type of employer it is and what a potential applicant can expect when working for the organization. The social media like Facebook and Linkedin are used to enhance appeal to the applicants and create a sense of belonging.
