Question
Do you agree or disagree? Why?
Leadership to me means having the ability to rally the troops and lead with integrity and knowledge. Leadership is the key foundation to many business ventures in order to be successful and while you might have decent to fair management, leadership is what will make your business thrive. Leadership is important because without it good employees will flee, while people leave bosses and not jobs there is a difference between a boss and a leader. You would be hard pressed to find someone that fits into the mold of leader. Leaders are people that others will respect due to their intellect, job knowledge and people skills. Such people are often respected, admired and held in high regards among their peers and colleagues. Bosses on the other hand are concerned more with the job at hand, production and making sure that production is being achieved. I have enjoyed working with leaders who follow under The Leadership of the U.S Marine Corps to the Leadership Principles of the U.S. Army theory of having “basic intelligence, clear and strong values and a high level of personal energy” I am sure that my military background combined with my faith play a part in me preferring and gravitating to these types of leaders. Under this type of leadership I am allowed to be social (as I enjoying interaction) while gaining knowledge to enhance my skills and prepare me for advanced opportunities. Also, as a Christian I strive to emulate Shackleton’s form of leadership personally and professionally, which creates a positive atmosphere for all employees and those that I might mentor. My selection of a great historical leader would be Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln displayed not 1 or 2 of the leadership qualities but all 10. He had a vision of how to make American great and what his role in the process was. He had the ability by holding the highest position in office along with enthusiasm, stability, concern for others, self –confidence, persistence, vitality, charisma and integrity. Now I could break every quality down of how they relay to the former President but history has thought us about this man whom we still admire, respect and changed circumstances for all American’s by ending slavery. History books told us he was tall, debonair, with high intelligence and that his environment along with his personal traits shaped him into a profound figure. He was a captivating, religious man who believed at a young age that he was a leader, his premonition came true as he lead the Union to victory. Lincoln had the importance of vision and the motive to lead that propelled him into iconic status. President Lincoln’s leadership style was one of caring, he was committed to a task and had great concern for people not a particular class of people but all people. With everything going on in society right now President Lincoln’s words are just as effective now as they were 150 years ago. “Let us discard all these this quibbling about this man and the other man-this race and that race being inferior, and therefore they must be placed in an inferior position.. Let us discard all things, and unite as one people throughout this land, until we shall once more stand up declaring that all men are created equal.” (Nuechterlein, 2006) References: Nuechterlein, J.A. Explanation / Answer
Leadership always wins over bossism. Its the capable leader who can drive his/her people to handle things and achieve goals in a more better way. As mentioned, boss is the one who will highly concentrates on production and completion of tasks/goals within a particular time set up. Here the goals might be achieved but where as a true leader will make his/her people work and also gives flexibility. This will definitely help them work more effectively as there will be chance to get relaxed and to think in a more better way. This will lead to achieve goals in a effective and also improves the quality of work as the people doesn't work under pressure. A true leader will encourage people to take initiatives and handle work in their own style to get the better results whereas in bossism people will not have chance to take up initiatives as their works will be predefined and will be confined to the particular task. A true leader will be admired for his skills and here personality, character and the views will play a major role. We cannot deny the fact that the major changes in the American history has been made by Mr. Abraham Lincoln. He truely proved as a great leader with very good skills in making his people work in a way it changed the system and made their lives better. It is the proper leadership which can make the people to take initiative and do something better when it is even a tougher task. Lincoln has succeeded to a very great extent in making this happen by treating the people equally and developing the same feeling among them. So it is always a proper leadership which can make people perform better and come up with the new thoughts and could make positve change/impact on the system.
