Question
Do you agree or disagree? Why?
Leadership means many things to many people. Leadership is a course that has been on the list of the most widely taught subjects in business schools worldwide (Collinson & Tourish, 2015). Leadership to me means how one leads, either personally or professionally. Leadership is about buy-in and influence. Leadership is also defined in our text as a type of social influence (Manning, & Curtis, 2012). In my opinion, leadership is an inherent trait and usually cannot be easily acquired. A good leader can lead people into trouble or triumph without question. Good leaders have many traits. These traits are usually not learned but are already present inside the characteristic panel of that individual. Good leadership is important because there must be leaders and followers. Great leaders need great followers. Occasionally a great leader can influence a follower and turn them into a great leader but one must be willing to easily adapt to that leader’s notion. Good leaders, lead followers without the followers even knowing they are being lead. Good leaders empower their followers to make decisions based on their knowledge and abilities. Good leaders also stand with their followers when times are good and when times are bad. The text refers to three types of leaders (Manning, & Curtis, 2012). I would agree. The teacher leader is the leader who empowers. The hero leader has a proven track record of success. And lastly, the ruler leader leads followers for power. All of these leaders are important in the right setting. The problem lies in that some leaders are not good fit for specific situations. As a good leader, one must realize when their characteristics are not needed and step down to let a better equipped leader take over. One person that was exceptional leader in my opinion was former President Bill Clinton. Although President Clinton fraternized with interns, his leadership style was imperative. Early on, Bill Clinton knew he wanted to be President of the United States. He groomed himself by watching other leaders. I believe that he was born with the inherent trait of personality and it showed. He could and still can work a crowd of people. He easily acquired buy-in from those individuals. He also had one of the most successful Presidencies in history. He was personable and sometimes breaking the initial barrier for a good leader is the most challenging. After that breakthrough, anything is possible. Reference: COLLINSON, D., & TOURISH, D. (2015). Teaching Leadership Critically: New Directions for Leadership Pedagogy.
