Question
For B, not sure how to find the exact equilibrium concentrations of the reactant and product. Please help with this.
4. Citrate is isomerized to isocitrate in the citric acid cycle. The AG for this reaction is -5 kJ/mol. The kinetics of the reaction was studied in-vitro where l M of citrate and l M of isocitrate were added to an aqueous solution of the enzyme responsible for this reaction. a) What is the keq' for this reaction? (2 points) b) What are the equilibrium concentrations of the reactant and product? (2 points) c) What is the preferred direction of the reaction under standard conditions? (1 point)Explanation / Answer
Answer (a) : Delta Go = -2.303 RT log Keq
log Keq = 5000 Jmol-1 / ( 2.303 x 8.314 JK-1mol-1 x 298 K)
log Keq = 0.876 ; Keq = 7.52
Answer (b) : Citrate <=======> Isocitrate
I (M) 1 1
C (M) -x +x
E (M) 1 - x 1 + x
Keq = [Isocitrate] / [citrate] = 1+x / 1-x = 7.52
7.52 (1-x) = 1+x = 7.52 - 7.52x
7.52 x + x = 7.52 - 1
8.52 x = 6.52
x = 0.765
Equilibrium concentration of citrate = 1 - x = 1 - 0.765 = 0.235 M
Equilibrium concentration of isocitrate = 1 + x = 1 + 0.765 = 1.765 M
Answer (c) : Reaction will move to forward direction as Keq is positive for this reaction.
