Question
We need to figure out how much pollution effluent enters the river. To do this a tracer of bromide ion is added into the sewage stream and mixed. On a test, 10 lbs of sodium bromide every hour for 24 hrs to a sewage stream with no bromide in it. Downstream of the introduction point, the sample shows 0.012 wt% sodium bromide. The sewage density is 966 kg m^-3 and the river water is the same as pure water at 20 degrees C. What is the flow rate of the sewage in pounds per min? The sewage density is 966 kg m^-3 and the river water is the same as pure water at 20 degrees C. What is the flow rate of the sewage in pounds per min?Explanation / Answer
Mass rate of sodium bromide = 10 lbs/h
Let the mass flow rate of sewage stream with sodium bromide be M lbs/hr
% sodium bromide = 10 / M * 100 = 0.012
M = 1000 / 0.012 = 83333.33 lbs/h
Mass flow rate of sewage without sodium bromide = 83333.33 – 10 = 83323.33 lbs/h
= 83323.33 / 60 lbs/min
= 1388.72 lbs/min
