Question

We need to figure out how much pollution effluent enters the river. To do this a tracer of bromide ion is added into the sewage stream and mixed. On a test, 10 lbs of sodium bromide every hour for 24 hrs to a sewage stream with no bromide in it. Downstream of the introduction point, the sample shows 0.012 wt% sodium bromide. The sewage density is 966 kg m^-3 and the river water is the same as pure water at 20 degrees C. What is the flow rate of the sewage in pounds per min? Explanation / Answer

Mass rate of sodium bromide = 10 lbs/h

Let the mass flow rate of sewage stream with sodium bromide be M lbs/hr

% sodium bromide = 10 / M * 100 = 0.012

M = 1000 / 0.012 = 83333.33 lbs/h

Mass flow rate of sewage without sodium bromide = 83333.33 – 10 = 83323.33 lbs/h

= 83323.33 / 60 lbs/min

= 1388.72 lbs/min
