I\'m confused about the meaning of basolateral vs. apical sides ofcell membranes

Question

I'm confused about the meaning of basolateral vs. apical sides ofcell membranes.

Does it refer to the membrane itself, that one of the side of themembrane is apical (that is facing the lumen, or cavity) and thebasolateral side of the cell membrane is the side thatfaces the cytoplasm of the cell itself, or is basolateral referringto the other end of the cell?

So in analogy, saying you have two soccer balls, lined up next toeach other, on the ground, apical side is the side that is facingup, to the outside world, right? is basolateral referring tothe inside of the soccer ball (the other side of the material thatmakes up the membrane/ball), or is it referring to the other end ofthe soccer ball (i.e. the part of the soccer balls touching theground?)

I hope this makes sense, any help is appreciated!
