Question

Regarding your percent by mass determination of your KCI solution in Part IV of the Procedure: How would your results have been affected if you had failed to transfer all of the KCl solution from the graduated cylinder to the evaporating dish?  How would your results have been affected if you had heated the KCl solution in the evaporating dish too fast, causing some of the solution to splatter? How your results have been affected if you had failed to completely evaporate the water from the KCl solution?

Explanation / Answer

1) If all the solution is trnsferrred into the evaporating dish, the percenta by mass of KCl determined would be less than the actual mass.

2)

The result is again erroneous and the mass percent is less than the actual mass percent.

3) If all the water is completely not evaporated, it increases the observed mass of KCl and thus the mass percent also increases than actual value.
