Could someone please help me with this question? Having a hardtime finding a clear answer in my book. If only one strand of the DNA molecule is transcribed for aparticular gene, why is the other strand needed? Why is itimportant that both strands have All theinformation?Explanation / Answer
Your question is right. Transcription takes place from 5'-3'only so only the 3'-5' strand of DNA is necessary. The other stranddoesnt seem to have any function or doesnt seem to benecessary.
But just remember that in DNA there are two strands. One strandis complementary to the other. If there is a mutation on onestrand, the excision repair enzymes remove it and synthesise a newstrand BASED ON THE COMPLEMENTARY STRAND.
hope it helps
