Question
In lab 1A you verify your precise and accurate use of volumetric glassware. Assume you collect the following data:
Initial weight of bottle 24.7583 (±0.0001) g
Weight of bottle + H2O 34.8346 (±0.0001) g
Temperature 25.6 C
Inverse density 1.00418 (±0.00003) mL/g
A) Calculate the volume of water delivered to the bottle.
B) Report the absolute uncertainty associated with the volume. Use the correct number of significant figures.
C) Report the relative uncertainty associated with the volume. Use the correct number of significant figures.
Explanation / Answer
(A) Mass of water = (mas of bottle + H2O) - ( mass of empty bottle)
Mass of water = 34.8346 - 24.7583 = 10.0763
Uncetainty in mass = sum of uncetainty = (0.0001 + 0.0001) = 0.0002
Hence mass of H2O = 10.0763 +- 0.0002g
Volume = mass / density = mass X 1/density (inverse density) = 10.0763 X 1.00418 =11.0805mL
The uncertainty in volume is equal to the of percent uncertainties
Uncertainty = (0.0002/10.0763 + 0.00003/ 1.00418) X 100 = 0.0049
Hence volume = 11.0805 +-0.0049
(B) Absolute uncetainty in volume = +-0.0049
(C) relative uncertainty = 0.0048 / 11.0805 = +-0.0004
