Question

Explain how the following factors would affect the accuracy or precision of the determination of the rate constant, k, in this experiment. the true molarity of the NaOH is different from that given on the bottle. the tert-butyl chloride contains several per cent tert-butyl alcohol as an impurity. During the experiment, the room temperature changes by several degrees. The flask is uncorked while the tert-butyl chloride solution is being heated to complete the reaction, so that some of the tert-butyl chloride is lost by evaporation.

Explanation / Answer

a) The rate constant increases if the concentration of NaOH is less than that specified on the bottle.
Since number of moles per litre volume of NaOH will be different than actual.
b) Impurities tend to bring drastic changes in the concentrations of the reactants which in turn gives an
error in rate constant. Unwanted reactions tend to happen and moreover the reaction will not reach completion.
c) Increasing temperature speeds up the reaction therefore K will increase with an increase in temperature.
d) When some t-butyl chloride is lost by evaporation , then the number of moles per litre will less which
means that there will be less collisons and you will end up calculating inaccurate K.
