Question

Copper can form two possible cations, cuprous (Cu+1) and cupric (Cu+2). When solid copper is reacted with a silver nitrate solution, two reactions are possible, as shown in the following equations: (a). AgNO3 (aq) + Cu (s) -> Ag (s) + CuNO3 (aq) Ag+1(aq) + Cu (s) -> Ag (s) + Cu+1 (aq) (b). 2 AgNO3 (aq) + Cu (s) -> 2 Ag(s) + Cu(NO3)2 (aq) 2 Ag+1 (aq) + Cu (s) -> 2 Ag(s) + Cu+2 (aq) How many grams of metallic silver can form from 3.524 g of copper metal according to equation (a)?

Molar masses (g/mol):

Ag = 107.87

AgNO3 = 169.87

Cu = 63.55

Cu(NO3)2 = 187.56

CuNO3 = 125.55

Important note: Use 3 digits after the decimal place in your answer.

Explanation / Answer

A) from above equation a we can see that

1 mole of Cu produce 1 mole of Ag.

So 63.5 g Cu produce 108g Ag.

3.524g Cu metal would produce (108/63.5)×3.524

So mass of Ag produced=5.993g
