Question
a) Calculate how much methanol will be needed in the experiment if exactly 50.00 g vegetable oil is measured. (The molar ratio of methanol:oil is 10:1 and the molar mass of the vegetable oil is 1000 g/mol. The density of methanol is 0.792 g/ mL);
b) Calculate the amount of KOH required. The potassium hydroxide base catalyst needed is 1% by weight of the oil used.
c) If you used 31.5 g of vegetable oil and produced 25 g of biodiesel under the same conditions the previous protocol described, what would be the percent yield of the synthesis.
Explanation / Answer
SOLUTION:
Dear candidate some of the information regarting the question is missing. On the bases of available information only first two parts can be solved.
(A) 50.00g of vegetable oil = 50.00/1000 = 0.05 moles; because number of moles = given mass/molar mass
molar ratio of mehanol : oil = 10:1
It means one mole of oil needs 10 moles of methanol.
Therefore methanol required for 0.05 moles of oil = 0.05 X 10 = 0.5moles of methanol.
(B) Amount of KOH needed = 1% of mass of Oil
Therefore mass of KOH required = 50 X(1/100) = 0.5g
