Question
here are the reaction with the 3 possible products, and also the IR spectra.!! determine which one is the right product based on the IR spectrum.
Please give me a complete explanation!
The BOTH IR SPECTRAis the same. One i got from lab and then the other the instructor gave me for comparison.
HO OH 10 NaOCI 20 CH3CO2H both HO OH aldehyde will show absorption near 2850 cm-1 which does not show carbonyl Carbonyl will not have absorption near 2850 Aldehyde will show absorption near 2850 cm-1 and near 1700 cm-1 there will be 2 carbonyl peaks corresponds to aldehyde and ketoneExplanation / Answer
Answer: 1o Oxidation that means aldehyde with secondary alcohol.Based on your IR
3351 for -OH streching, 1740 carbonyl functionality, 2873 cm-1 C-H of aldehyde.that primary alcohol oxidized as aldehyde that we confirm with 1740, 2873 cm-1 peaks.
secondary alcohol confirmed based on 3351 O-H streching that denotes secondary alcohol. so first structure is the answer
On other hand side primary alcohol is more reactive compared secondary alcohol with oxidizing agent like NaOCl. that also suggest aldehyde with secondary alcohol product that means primary alcohol oxidation more faster than secondary
