Question
i need help with my online lab assignment. For this assignment, the target compound that you should synthesize is butanol. This is a substitution reaction. Keep in mind the substitution pattern of the product and the mechanism accommodated by this arrangement.
for the starting material i chose chlorobutane. i now want to know how to go about the rest of the process. from the following picture, which other starting materials do i need?
and then which work up reagant do i use? the next step would be the TLC values (Rf) for (a) Starting Materials and (b) Products, as well as the writtn mechanism for this reaction.
the next step would be to fill out the following chart for the ir and nmr spectra
thank you
Explanation / Answer
Q1) The reagent is aqueous KOH.
Q2) As the substrate is primary RX, the reaction follows SN2 mechanism with abckside attack of nucloephile OH- replacing CL-. However there is no chiral carbon. so no inversion observed.
IR spectrum.
The IR spectrum of butanol has a prominent broad peak at about 3300 -3600 for the O-H str and the C-H str appears at 2900 followed by peaks at 1500, 1400 for C-H def and 1300 for C-O def.
proton NMR
The methyl is observed as a triplet at 0.9 ppm
the C3 methylene as a t/d at 1.3-1.4 ppm and the C2 methylene as d/d at 1.6 ppm
C-1 CH2 much downshielded around 3.6 due to the -OH attached and the
-OH proton at about 4-4.5 ppm
