Question
POSTLABORATORY ASSIGNMENT I. which anions are present and absent in an unknown solution given the following observations? yellow precipitate. The unknown solution in test tube e1 plus AgNO, gi nto test tube 3. partially dissolves in NH40H The test tube poured into 2. precipitate. The solution in test tube 2 is made acidic with HNos and gives a white Anion so absent Anion(s) present 2. Which anions are present and absent in an unknown solution given the following observations? The unknown solution in test tube plus AgNOs gives a white precipitate. The supemate n test tube 1 is poured into test The white precipitate in test tube 01 dissolves completely in NH40H. solution in test tube e1 is poured into test tube The solution in test tube e2 is made acidic h HNOy and gives a white precipitate. The solution in test tube 3 plus Ba(NO32 gives a white precipitate. Anion(s) absent Anion (s) present 3. Provide the formula for the following monoatomic anions. (b) bromide ion (a) fluoride ion (d) sulfide ion (c) oxide ion (f phosphide ion (e) nitride ion 4. Provide the formula for the following polyatomic anions. (b) nitrite ion (a) nitrate ion (d) sulfite ion. (c) sulfate ion (f chlorite ion (e) chlorate ion Copyright c 2013 Pearson Education Identitying Anions in solution 109Explanation / Answer
1. Yellow prepitate formed, which are partially soluble in NH4OH solution indicate the presence of bromide ion (Br-). Further on addition of HNO3 acid to the solution break the complex formed between [Ag(NH3)2]Br to give back AgBr.
Anions absent - Cl-, I-, SO42-
2.White prepitate formed, which are completely soluble in NH4OH solution indicate the presence of Chloride ion (Cl-). Further on addition of HNO3 acid to the solution breaks the complex formed between [Ag(NH3)2]Cl to give back AgCl.
The white precipitate with barium nitrate solution indicate the presence of sulphate ion due to the formation of BaSO4
Anions absent - Br-, I-
