Hold the glass about one foot above a white sheet of paper in a well-lit room. Look down into the glass. Describe the coloration and whether or not you can see the paper through the glass. Pour another half an inch of soda in to the glass,and again make observations.Repeat this process until there is between 2 and 3 inches of liquid in the glass. What trend did you observe as your experiment progressed? Describe the relation ship between the amount of light that passes through the solution and the distance through which the light travels.

Explanation / Answer

As we increase the amount of colored beverage in the glass, the distance through which light passes also increases. Hence, the light coming from white paper travels more distance through the substance and thus it gets absorbed more in the subtance. And this way appearance of white paper decreases with increase of amount of substance in the glass.
