Question

You wish to prepare 100 mL of a 0.200 M solution by dilution of a 1.0 M solution. Which of the following pieces of glassware will you use?

100 ml graduated cylinder

100 ml volumetric flask

10 ml volumetric pipet

25 ml volumetric pipet

10 mL graduated pipet

25mL graduated pipet

Select one:

a. 100 mL Graduated cylinder and 10 mL graduated pipet

b. 100 mL Volumetric flask and 25 mL graduated pipet

c. 100 mL Volumetric flask and 10 mL volumetric pipet

d. 100 mL Graduated cylinder and 10 mL volumetric pipet

e. 100 mL Volumetric flask and 25 mL volumetric pipet

Explanation / Answer

We will need:

M1V1 = M2V2

calculate initial volume from:

V2 = 100 mL = 0.1 L

1*V1 = 0.1*0.2

V1 = 0.02 L = 20 mL

so

20 mL and 100 mL will be required

20 mL for measuring (exactly) 100 mL for dilution

so...

for the 20 mL...use the voluemtric pipet, take out 20 mL from the STOCK solution

then

add to the 100 mL to the volumetric flask

note that we will need ot mix this so we can't use the graduated cylinder

so

choose

e. 100 mL Volumetric flask and 25 mL volumetric pipet
