Question

You wish to prepare 100 mL of a 0.200 M solution by dilution of a 1.0 M solution. Which of the following pieces of glassware will you use? 100 ml graduated cylinder, 100 ml volumetric flask, 10 ml volumetric pipet, 25 ml volumetric pipet, 10 mL graduated pipet, & 25mL graduated pipet Select one:

a. Volumetric flask and larger volumetric pipet

b. graduated cylinder and smaller volumetric pipet

c. Graduated cylinder and smaller graduated pipet

d. volumetric flask and larger graduated pipet

e. Volumetric flask and smaller volumetric pipet

Explanation / Answer

I would choose "d." You need to start with 20mL (M1V1 = M2V2), so a small (10mL) pipet will not do. There will be more room for error needing to pipet twice with a 10mL pipet opposed to just once with a 25mL pipet. A volumetric pipet is designed to give EXACTLY the amount it says (i.e. a 25mL Volumetric pipet has one and only one line for 25mL, so there is no way to determine 20mL).

I hope this helps.
