Question

These are questions from my microbiology class. Please show work so I can understand it better.

1.) You do a 1:10 serial dilutions three times. What is the final dilution factor in your final tube?

2.) How much diluent would you need to add to a 0.5 mL solution to achieve a 1/100 dilution?

Calculating the Dilution Factor is = Volume of Sample divided by (Volume of Sample + Volume of Diluent)
& Final Dilution Factor = Dilution Factor "A" x's Dilution Factor "B" x's ... x's Dilution Factor "Z"

Explanation / Answer

1. in test tube A ------- 1ml + 9ml = 10 ml ------ 10 times dilution

2. in test tube B ---- take 1 ml from test tube A + 9 ml = 10 ml ----- 100 times dilution

3. in test tube C ---- take 1 ml from test tube B + 9 ml = 10 ml ------ 1000 times dilution.

2.....--- it will need 50 ml of diluent , for 100 times dilution ---- 0.5/50 = 100
