The Nitrogen and phosphorus elements from fertilizersand manures are an essential nutrients for all forms of life.However when they are used in concentrated levels, these substancescould pose a great environmental hazard. For instance,Nitrogen in the soil is converted by soil bacteria to nitrates. Insome cases, these nitrates can be leached into the groundwater orbe washed out of the soil surface into streams and rivers by theprocess of nitrification. Eventually, this process causes denseaquatic plant growth and form water that does not support aquaticlife. In addition high nitrate levels in drinking water areconsidered to be dangerous to human health.
Similarly, Phosphorus is washed into surface waterstogether with the soil that is being eroded since it cannot bereadily washed out of the soil, because it is bound to soilparticles and moves together with them. Although it is notconsidered to be dangerous it stimulates the growth of algae inslow moving water. These algae eventually die and decompose,removing the oxygen from the water causing fish kills. This processis called Eutrophication. Eutrophication value at or below anannual mean of 0.5 mg m-3 is suggested to be entering the e GreatBarrier Reef lagoon (1992).
These two process greatly affect the marine reefenvironment such as those in North east of Queensland.
It is estimated that the annual emissions of Nitrogen andPhosphorus due to agriculture in Derwent catchments area is 522.7tonnes and 905.1 tonnes respectively and in Tamar/Esk watercatchments area is 166.3 tonnes and 288.0 tonnes respectively.(1998 - 2000).
