Question

Exercise 15.62 Consider the following reaction: A(g)2B(g) Find the equilibrium partial pressures of A and B for each of the following different values of Kp. Assume that the initial partial pressure of B in each case is 1.0 atm and that the initial partial pressure of A is 0.0 atm. Make any appropriate simplifying assumptions. Part A Kp= 2.0 Enter your answers numerically separated by a comma. Express your answer using two significant figures. pA, pB = atm SubmitMy AnswersGive Up Incorrect; Try Again; 4 attempts remaining Part B Kp= 2.0×104 Enter your answers numerically separated by a comma. Express your answer using two significant figures. pA, pB = atm SubmitMy AnswersGive Up Incorrect; Try Again; 5 attempts remaining Part C Kp= 1.2×105 Enter your answers numerically separated by a comma. Express your answer using two significant figures. pA, pB = atm

Explanation / Answer

for the reaction A<--->2B , Kp =2

for the reaction 2B<---> A

1/Kp =0.5

[PA]/ [PB]2 = 0.5

let P= partial pressure of A at equilibrium

so at equilibrium PB= 1-2P, PA= P

hence P/ (1-2P)2= 0.5, when solved using excel. P=0.191 atm

So at equilibrium PA= 0.191 atm and PB= 1-2*0.191=0.618 atm

2. for the second case P/(1-2P)2 = 104/2 = 5000

PA= 0.495025 amd PB= 1-2*0.492025=0.00995 atm

3. for the third case P/(1-2P)2= 10-5/1.2 = 8.33*10-6

PA= 8.33*10-6 atm , PB= 1-2*8.33*10-6 = 0.99998 atm
