Question
Sodium azide, a compound containing only sodium (Na) and nitrogen (N), is used as a propellant for, inflating airbags in some automobiles. A sample of sodium azide was weighed into a crucible. The crucible was covered and heated until only Na remained. The crucible was then cooled and reweighed. The following data were collected. mass of crucible and cover, g 28.887 mass of crucible, cover, and sodium azide, g 30.354 mass of crucible, cover, and Na, g determine the empirical formula of sodium azide. Write chemical equation for the formation of Na and N_2 from sodium azide.Explanation / Answer
3. Sodium azide
(1) mass of NaN3 in the crucible = 30.354 - 28.887 = 1.467 g
moles of NaN3 = 1.467/65 = 0.022 mol
mass of Na left in the crucible = 29.406 - 28.887 = 0.519 g
moles of Na = 0.519/23 = 0.022 mol
mole ratio of Na/NaN3 = 0.022/0.022 = 1
So empirical formula for sodium azide = NaN3
(2) Chemical equation,
2NaN3(s) ---> 2Na(s) + 3N2(g)
