Question

If one forgot to add a boiling stone while performing a distillation and the temperature of the liquid already near b.p., what would you do? b. Compound A has a vapor pressure of 400 mm Hg at 95 degree C and Compound B has a vapor pressure of 250 mm Hg at 95 degree C. If A and B are miscible, what is the vapor pressure of a mature of 3 moles A, 1 mole of B at 95 degree C? c. To distilled the unknown ester (Exp DE Part II) you have used simple distillation, however when you separated the low boiling point alcohol from high boiling point alcohol (Exp DE Part I) you have used fractional distillation. When should a simple distillation be used and when must a fractional distillation be used? d. What is wrong in the distillation set-up pictured below?

Explanation / Answer

Answer 2a. if there is no bumping it is ok but bumping occur inside the flask you should reduce the temperature and add the boiling stone and carry out the experiment.

Answer 2c: Simple distillation is used when two compounds in a mixture have different boiling point e.g. Distillation of water . Fractional distillation is used generally for mixtures containing more than two or three components having different boiling point.

Answer 2d: The Heating is not proper i.e. use of water bath and oil bath. Connection are also not correct. if suction pump is required then there must be an attachment.
