Question
What is the theoretical yield of the following reaction? Also what configuration would the final product have and why?
1.5ml of basic stock solution is used which contains 10g NaOH; 100ml H2O and 80ml of Ethanol
0.10 ml of reactant stock solution is used which contains 50 ml of benzaldehyde and 18.0 ml of acetone.
Note: Assume volumes are additive in mixing the above stock solutions when calculating theoretical yield.
C 2 HaC CH Acetone molar mass: 58 g/mol density: 0.79g/mL NaOH, Hoo CH3CH2OH Benzaldehyde molar mass: 106 g/mol density: 1.04 g/mL original acetone carbons Dibenzalacetone molar mass: 234 g/molExplanation / Answer
For acetone 18.0 ml/0.79g/ml = 22.78 g i.e., 22.78g/58g/mol = 0.39 mol
And benzaldehyde 50 ml/1.04g/ml = 48.07g or, 48.07g/106g/mol = 0.45 mol
1 mol of acetone should react with 2 mol of benzaldehyde
Hence, 0.45 mol of benzaldehyde will react with 0.45/2 = 0.225 mol of acetone to produce 0.225 mol of dibenzalacetone.
Hence, theoretical Yield of the given reaction = 0.225 mol x 234 g/mol = 52.65 gm
The final product will mostly have trans, trans configuration mainly due to steric reasons.
