Question
A mixture of 10.7 ml of Cyclohexanol and 3.0mL of 85% phosphoric acid with a magnetic stir bar was placed in a 50 ml round bottomed flask. The mixture was distilled to obtain a 6.7ml of distillate, cyclohexane. Show all steps of the calculation. Calculate the theoretical yield Calculate percent yield for the product If you needed 30g of Cyclohexanol for the reaction, how many mu L would you add to the flask? How many milliliters of Cyclohexanol would be needed if you were required to make 8g of Cyclohexane? Assume 80% yield for the reaction.Explanation / Answer
Dehydration of cyclohexanol to cyclohexene
a) moles of cyclohexanol = 10.7 ml x 0.96 g/ml/100.16 g/mol
= 0.1025 mol
Theoretical yield = 0.1025 mol x 82.14 g/mol = 8.424 g
b) Percent yield = (6.7 ml x 0.81 g/ml) x 100/8.424 g
= 64.42%
c) To get 30 g cyclohexanol
ml of cyclohexanol to be added = 30 g/0.96 g/ml
= 31.25 ml
d) To make 8 g of cyclohexene
with 80% yield
If 8 g is 80% yield so 100% is 10 g
ml of cyclohexanol needed = ((10 g/82.14 g/mol) x 100.16 g/mol)/0.96 g/ml
= 12.70 ml
