Question

A natural gas contains carbon dioxide (CO_2), hydrogen sulfide (H_2S), methane (CH_4 also written Cl), all other hydrocarbons (written C2+) and nitrogen (N_2). Selexol solvent is used to remove the hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide so that the natural gas can be transported safely. The inlet or feed gas and the exit or product gas volume compositions are shown below. For simplicity assume that the selexol removes or absorbs no nitrogen. (a) Calculate the percentage of the inlet H_2S removed. (b) Calculate the percentage of the inlet C2+ removed (c) Would your answers change drastically if you assumed that the C1 was not absorbed?

Explanation / Answer

a)

% inlet H2S removed:

% = removed / inlet * 100% = (inlet - outlet) / inlet *100 %

% = (90-1.6)/90 * 100 = 98.2222 % is removed approx.

b)

C2+ remoeved

% inlet C2+removed:

% = removed / inlet * 100% = (inlet - outlet) / inlet *100 %

% = (11.1-10.5)/11.1* 100 = 5.4054 % is removed approx.

c)

Note that for C1 has a very large % of total feed/Gas flow rate, therefore, they WILL change drastically, i.e. assuming neglection is possible, this will ncurr in a high error
