Question

In the movie Frozen the King and Queen (who are both normal) give birth to a daughter Elsa and a daughter Anna. When Elsa touches something it turns into ice. Anna does not have this power; she is normal like her parents. Although the two sisters have fun with their ice scenes, it becomes dangerous. The King and Queen give Elsa gloves to protect others from being injured by her power. They take Elsa to a “doctor/wizard” who asks “It is inborn (inherited) or cursed?” It was inborn.

What does this tell you about the Frozen allele, explain your answer?

Could it be X-linked, explain your answer?

What does this tell you about the genotype of the King and of the Queen?

Predict the possibility that Anna has the Frozen allele . Hint: on a separate piece of paper use a Punnett square with the parent's alleles to see which allele combinations would result in Anna being normal.)

Explanation / Answer

This disease is an autosomal recessive genes which only shows it's effect when both recessive genes comes together. In autosomal recessive disease only female can be effected because they only can have both recessive allles together.

So the Elsa was having the disease but Anna was not having the disease , She might be a carrier but it will not suffice the necessary condition for having the disease

No it can't be xlinked becuase if it would have x linked then father would have shown the trait because there is only one x chromosome in genotype

The genotype of King and Queen :- P/p *P/p (If P shows normal and p shows gene for frozen)

Anna would have the gene and the probability that the offspring will show the trait will be shown by punnet saure method and the offspring are:- Pp pp pp Pp.

The middle two will show the disease so the probability is 50%.
