Question

Sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO_3), also known as sodium bicarbonate or "baking soda", can be used to relieve acid indigestion. Acid indigestion is the burning sensation you get in your stomach when it contains too much hydrochloric acid (HCl), which the stomach secretes to help digest food. Drinking a glass of water containing dissolved NaHCO_3 neutralizes excess HCl through this reaction: HCl (aq) + NaHCO_3(aq) rightarrow NaCl(aq) + H_2O(l) + CO_2(g) The CO_2 gas produced is what makes you burp after drinking the solution. Suppose the fluid in the stomach of a man suffering from indigestion can be considered to be 150. mL of a 0.027 M HCl solution. What mass of NaHCO_3 would he need to ingest to neutralize this much HCl? Be sure your answer has the correct number of significant digits.

Explanation / Answer

V = 150 mL of M = 0.027 HCl solution

mass of NaHCO3 required for neutralization?

since ratio is clearly 1:1, that is

1 mol of HCl per 1 mol of NAHCO#, we need to find mol of NaHCO3

from mol of HCl

so

mol = MV

M = 0.027 mol of HCl per liter, V = 150 mL = 0.150 L

mol = (0.027)(0.150) = 0.00405 mol of HCl

so

1:1 ratio means --> 0.00405 mol of NaHCO3

so

mass = mol*MW = (0.00405 mol )(84.007 g/mol) = 0.340 g of NaHCO3 required for neutralization
