Question
Will AgIO, precipitate when 100. mL of 0.010 M AgNO_3 are mixed with 10.0 mL of 0.015 M NaIO_3? Ksp = 3.1 times 10^-8 Circle the salts that will be substantially more soluble in acidic solution than in pure water. For those which are more soluble in acid, write the appropriate net ionic equation representing the increased solubility. AuCl_3 CaCO_3 Cu(OH)_3 Mg(CN)_2 Cr(OH)_3 is insoluble in water (Ksp = 6.3 times 10^-31). However, it dissolves in a very basic solution. Explain this phenomenon and write an appropriate chemical reaction.Explanation / Answer
1) Ag+ concentrtation = 100 x 0.01 / (100 + 10) = 9.09 x 10^-3 M
IO3- concentration = 10 x 0.015 / (100 + 10) = 1.36 x 10^-3 M
AgIO3 , Q = [Ag+][IO3-]
Q = (9.09 x 10^-3 ) (1.36 x 10^-3)
Q = 1.24 x 10^-5
Ksp = 3.1 x 10^-8
Q > Ksp . so the precipitate will form
2) CaCO3 , Cu(OH)2 , Mg(CN)2 are more soluble in acid than water
because :
1)
CaCO3 ---------------> Ca+2 + CO3-2
CO3-2 + H+ -------------> HCO3
2) Cu(OH)2 ------------------->Cu+2 + 2OH-
H+ + OH- - -------------------> H2O
3) Mg(CN)2 ----------------> Mg+2 + 2CN-
H+ + CN- --------------->HCN
