Question
Will AgIO3 precipitate when 37 mL of 0.030 M AgNO3 is mixed with 27 mL of 0.014 M NaIO3? (Ksp of AgIO3 is 3.1× 10-8). Support your answer by calculating the ion product (Q) of the AgIO3 solution. Support your answer by calculating the ion product (Q) of the AgIO3 solution.Explanation / Answer
Given
Ksp = 3.1× 10-8
Now we will calcualte the ionic product of AgIO3, for which we need concentration of Ag+ and IO3-
moles Ag+ = volume X molarity = 37m L x 0.030 M = 1.11 millimoles
moles IO3- = volume X molarity =27m L x 0.014 M =0.378 millimoles
total volume =37 + 27 mL = 64mL
[IO3-]= 0.378 / 64 = 0.0059 M
[Ag+]= 1.11 / 64=0.0173 M
Qsp = ionic product = 0.0059 X 0.0173 =1.02 x 10^-4>> Ksp
