Question

Calculating [H30+] and [OH-] In Solutions Water is amphoteric and ionizes according tothe chemical equation H20 H20 H30 OH In pure water, the concentrations ofHo and oH are both equal to 1x10 7 M and the ion nt of water (KE) is 1 x 10 14 M. 1 x 10-7 M 1 x 10 M 1 x 10 The equation for the ion product constant of water reveals that a concentrations of hydronium ion (Hao l) and hydroxide on (oH are inversely proportional since they are on the same side of the equation, If a solution's concentration of HJo increases, then its concentration of OH decreases. If a solution's concentrafion of Hso decreases, then its concentration of OH increases. This equation also reveals that if the concentration of either the hydronium ion or the hydroxide ion is known, then the concentration of the other can be calculated using the ion product constant of water. Part A Determine whether the following hydroxide (loH bcorrespond toacidio, basic, or neutral solutions by estimating their corresponding hydronium ion product constant of water Hydronium ion concentration H30 Solution condition Greater than 1 x 10 7 M Equal to 1 x 10 M Neutral Less than 1 x 10-7 M It may help to keep the following equation in mind as you work 1 x 10 MM 1 x 10 T M 1 x 10

Explanation / Answer

Assuming that the water is at 25 deg C at which its ionic constant(Kw) is equal to 1*10^-14M

Now using the following equation Kw=[H3O+][OH-]

for 1) [OH-]=3*10^-9

[H3O+]=Kw/[OH-]

=1*10^-14/3*10^-9

=3.33*10^-6

Since [H3O+]>1*10^-7M solution is Acidic in nature

for 2) [OH-]=8*10^-10

[H3O+]=Kw/[OH-]

=1*10^-14/8*10^-10

=1.25*10^-5

Since [H3O+]>1*10^-7M solution is Acidic in nature

for 3) [OH-]=4*10^-13

[H3O+]=Kw/[OH-]

=1*10^-14/4*10^-13

=2.5*10^-2

Since [H3O+]>1*10^-7M solution is Acidic in nature

for 4) [OH-]=2*10^-2

[H3O+]=Kw/[OH-]

=1*10^-14/2*10^-2

=5*10^-13

Since [H3O+]<1*10^-7M solution is Basic in nature

for 5) [OH-]=5*10^-5

[H3O+]=Kw/[OH-]

=1*10^-14/5*10^-5

=2*10^-10

Since [H3O+]<1*10^-7M solution is Basic in nature
