Question

In the neutralization reaction between the hydrogen carbonate (HCO3-) and hydrochloric acid (HCl), it will take 1 mole of HCl to neutralize every 1 mole of HCO3-. Base on this experiment (a) calculate the number of moles of HCO3- if 0.001 moles of HCl is cosumed. (b) calculate the concentration of the antacidsolution if 0.030 L was used in the titration. (c) If an antacid tablet was diluted in 100.0 mL and the calculated molarity was 0.033 M calculate the original mass of antacid in the tablet. MM=60.01 g/mol HCO3-.

Explanation / Answer

a)

find moles of HCO3- required for 0.001 mol of HCl

ratio is:

HCO3- + HCl --> H2CO3 + Cl-

ratio is 1:1

so

0.001 mol of HCl required 0.001 mol of HCO-

b)

concentration if V = 0.03 L

M = mol/V = 0.001/0.03 = 0.0333

c)

if it is diluted, then V = 100 mL

find mass of antacid

mol = MV = 100*0.033 = 3.3 mmol

mass = mol*MW = (3.3*10^-3)(60.01) = 0.198033 g of HCO3- present
