Violators will be prosecuted Name section Experiment 9 Data and Calculations: Molar Mass of a Volatile Liquid Trial 2 Trial I Mass of flask and sofrer Mass of flask. siRpor, and Mass of flask, stopper, and water (see directions; only if told to do so) emperature of boiling water bath Atmospheric (ambient) pressure Calculations and Results Pressure of vapor, P volume of flask (volume of vapor), V L Temperature of vapor, T Mass of vapor, m fcontinued on following page)

Explanation / Answer

Sample calculation for trial 1 :

Atmospheric pressure = 760 mmHg

Pressure of the vapor = 1atm

volume of the flask (volume of vapor) = (425.85-125.18) * 1gm/mL = 301.67 mL (density of water = 1gm/mL)

Temperature of the vapor = 99.2oC + 273 = 372.3 K

mass of vapor = 124.48gm-124.18 gm = 0.3 gm

number of moles (n) = PV/RT

                              = 1 atm *0.301 L/0.082L atm/K/mol * 372.3K = 0.012195 moles

Molar mass = mass of vapor/number of moles = 0.3gm/0.012195 moles =24.6gm/mol
