Question

Analytical chem You are developing an ICP middot MS method for the analysis of lead in ocean water and you need to perform a spike recovery to test your methods accuracy. You have calibrated your instrument from 0.5 ppb to 100 ppb and you have 50 mL of each prepared ocean water sample left to perform spike recoveries on. You chose a sample that has a concentration of 65 ppb to perform you spike recoveries on. If you only wanted to use 10 mu l of spike solution what would the concentration of the stock solution have to be to perform a 50% spike of the 50% spike of the 50 mL sample. (50% spike means adding 50% of the analyte concentration)

Explanation / Answer

Percent Recovery = [(Sample + Spike) - (Sample)] / [(ml of spike used)] * 100

50 = (65 + x) - (65) / 0.010 ml * 100

x = 0.005 ppb

The concentration of the stock solution is 0.005 ppb.
