Question
how can we get 200g/L ??? (at the problem the key is only 0.2atm .... that just volume...)
I know that the air has 20% volume of oxygen. But we don't know mass of oxygen.
Thermodynamics, Statistical Thermodynamics, & Kinetics 3rd Edition E Chapter 1, Problem 30NPP Show all steps ON Bookmark Problem Carbon monoxide competes with oxygen for binding sites on the transport protein hemoglobin CO can be poisonous if inhaled in large quantities. A safe level of CO in air is 50. parts per million (ppm). When the CO level increases to 800. ppm, dizziness, nausea, and unconsciousness occur, followed by death. Assuming the partial pressure of oxygen in air at sea level is 0.20 atm, what proportion of CO to O2 is fatal?Explanation / Answer
Note that this is clearly incorrect, since the mass of O2 per liter is not that big
i.e.
Density of air is 1.2 g/L, therefore 200 g/L for only O2 alone ( 20% of air) is not possible
the actual value will be:
MW of Air = 29 g/mol
Density of air = 1.2 g/L
Molar density --> 1.2 g/L / (29 g/mol) = 0.04137 mol/L
this is the molar density of air, or concentration
