Conclusion: Post Lab Questions: 1) sketch the obtained by you in this experiment. 2) A student spotted a TLC plate and ran it 10% showed a streak rather than separate spots for the The TLC student have would components. What technical mistake m the 3) you suggest to student? effort to A and B are in a mixture which can be subjected to TLC. In an acetate select the most favorable eluent several trials including different hexane systems were used. Which is the best solvent system to elute compound A? Compound B?Explanation / Answer
2. TLC is a technique to see different compounds are present or not and if present can they be seperated or not. When passed through polar system such as ethyl acetate in hexane different compound moves differently on the basis of the compounds polarity. Remember hexane is non-polar so a drop of eth. acetate will increase the system's polarity. Now in 10% eth acetate the components showed a streak means the polarity of the solvent system was too high for that component. So it is suggested to pass the component in pure hexane first, then slowly increasing the polarity i.e 1% then 2% etc.
3. In TLC the better the seperation of the spots easier is to seperate them. So for both A and B the first case i.e 3:1 is best option as the seperation is better.
