Indicate two types of transitions that are associated with each category of compounds listed. UV/VIs spectroscopy is one of the leading techniques used by analytical chemist. List two major categories of compounds that can be analyzed using this technique. Indicate two types of transitions that are associated with each category of compounds listed.

Explanation / Answer

Two major categories of compounds that can be analyzed using UV/Vis technique are transition metal ions and highly conjugated organic compounds.

1) Transition metals- transition metal in solution shows absorption in the visible region, because electrons within the metal atoms can be excited from one electronic state to other. Their inner electron shells are incomplete. These metal ions are complexed by hydration e.g. [Cu (H204)]2+. These types of absorptions are due to charge transfer process, where electrons are moved from one part of the system to another by the energy provided by visible light.

2) Highly conjugated organic compounds-   Organic compounds, with a high degree of conjugation, absorb light in the near UV or visible regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The wavelength of maximum absorption moves to a longer wavelength and the absorption intensity may increase.
