Question

Consider a mixture with composition xbenz = 0.4 at 85°C. The mixture is heated slowly. Use the above phase diagram to determine the following:

i) At what temperature does the first vapor bubble form?

ii) What is the composition of this vapor phase?

iii) At what temperature does complete vaporization of the initial mixture first occur? iv) What is the composition of the last remaining liquid droplet prior to the complete vaporization?

110 Vapor 105 100 95 L+V 90- Liquid 85 80 0.200 0.400 0.600 0.800 Toluene Mole fraction of benzene (r benz Benzene

Explanation / Answer

i) To get this value draw a perpendicular on x-axis at x=0.4. Locate the point where this line intersects the lower curve. The temperature at this point gives you the bbble point. Ans = 93oC

ii) From this point draw aline parallel to x-axis. Locate the point where it intersects the top curve. The composition at that point is your answer. Ans: x benzene = 0.6

iii) Draw a line perpendicular to x-axis at x=0.4. Locate point of intersection with the top curve. The temperature at this point gives you the temeperature at which complete vaporization occurs. Ans = 101oC

iv) From the point is above question draw a line parallel to the x-axis. Locate its point of intersection with the bottom curve. This point gives you the composition of last liquid droplet. Ans: x benzene = 0.2
