Question
Clerici solution is a solution of equal parts of thallium formate (TI(CHO_2), mw = 251) and thallium malonate (TI(C_3 H_3 O_4) mw = 510) in water. It is a freely flowing, odorless liquid which changes from yellowish to colorless upon decreasing the concentration of the thallium salts. At a density of 4.25 g/cm^3 at 20 degree C. So dense... it will FLOAT ROCKS!! The solution can be prepared by dissolving 300 grams of each salt in 40 gram of water. What is the expected final volume, Molarity. Molality and Mole Fraction (of each component)Explanation / Answer
Final volume (V) = mass of solution / density of solution
= (300 g + 300 g + 40 g) / (4.25 g/cm3 )
= 150.6 cm3
= 0.1506 L
Moles of Tl(CHO2) = mass/molar mass = 300 g/251 g/mol = 1.195 mol
Moles of Tl(C3H3O4) = mass/molar mass = 300 g/510 g/mol = 0.5882 mol
Moles of water = 40 g/ 18 g/mol = 2.222 mol
molarity of TI(CHO2) = moles of Tl(CHO2)/volume = 1.195 mol/0.1506 L = 7.93 M
Molarity of Tl(C3H3O4) = 0.5885 mol/0.1506 L = 3.91 M
Molarity of solution = (1.195 mol + 0.5885 mol) / 0.1506 L = 11.8 M
Molality of Tl(CHO2) = 1.195 mol/(300 g + 300 g +40 g) x 1000 = 1.87 m
Molality of Tl(C3H3O4) = 0.5885 mol/(300 g +300 g +40 g)x1000 = 0.920 m
Mole fraction of Ti(CHO2) = 1.195 mol /(1.195 mol + 0.5885 mol +2.222 mol) = 0.298
Mole fraction of Tl(C3H3O4) = 0.5885 mol/(1.195 mol +0.5885 mol +2.222 mol) = 0.145
Mole fraction of water = 2.222 mol/(1.195 mol +0.5885 mol +2.222 mol) = 0.555
