Question

Please help with both parts!

Coordination Number vs. Crystal Structure of Ionic Crystals The ionic radii of Li^+, Na^+, Cs^+, and Cl^- are 0.078, 0.098, 0.165 nm and 0.181 nm, respectively. Using the relation between cation/anion atomic size ratio and coordination number (see the table below) (1) Determine the coordination numbers in LiCl, NaCl and CsCl, respectively. Use the table below as a reference. (2) Determine the crystal structure of LiCl based on the coordination number, i.e. is it the same as NaCl structure or CsCl structure?. (Note that NaCl and CsCl structures are two common crystal structures in AB compounds). You can obtain the crystal structure by repeating the ionic configuration for the corresponding coordination number in the table below.^a

Explanation / Answer

1. Radius of Na+/Radius of Cl^- = 0.098/0.181 = 0.54

Radius ratio of NaCl is 0.54 . According to the table CN = 6

Radius ratio of LiCl is 0.43. Acoording to the table CN = 4

radius ratio of CsCl 0.91. According to the table CN = 8

-------------------------------------------------------------

LiCl will have a octahedral structure
