Question

pKw = 14.
Initially, I thought that I need to calculate Ka values for these acids, because larger Ka means stronger acid/base and the answer that I got from this is CH3COOH, which is not right. I don't really understand how to answer this question so I would really appreciate if you could explain it a bit to me. Thanks so much! Use the pKa data for the weak acids to determine the strongest conjugiiraisase. 14 pK, Acid pka 7.53 2,95xIO HOCI H202 11.63-24 AIO IO 9.24 575 IO NHA Biggest zstronges is CH3COOH 4.74 l,8197 *IO (A) OCI Larger ka means (B) HO2 stronger acial base. (C) NH, pka Ka Ka (D) CH3COO

Explanation / Answer

Lower is the pKa, stronger is the acid and weaker is its conjugate base, among the given , pKa of CH3COOH is lower means it is strongest among the given, but its conjugate base is weak. So higher pKa less strong is the acid and its conjugate base is stronger so it is HO2- as its acid H2O2 has high pKa.
