Question
Calculate the pH of a buffer of 1M acetic acid and 1.10M sodium acetate. Then, calculate pH after 0.1 mole of HCl (g) added. Assume volume doesn't change. Acetic acid Ka=1.8x10^-5. (in the second part, also please help explain how the HCl reacts). Thanks Calculate the pH of a buffer of 1M acetic acid and 1.10M sodium acetate. Then, calculate pH after 0.1 mole of HCl (g) added. Assume volume doesn't change. Acetic acid Ka=1.8x10^-5. (in the second part, also please help explain how the HCl reacts). ThanksExplanation / Answer
If this a buffer then
pKa = -log(Ka) = -log(1.8*10^-5) = 4.75
initially
pH = pKa + log(Acetate/Acetic Acid)
pH = 4.75 + log(1.1/1)
pH = 4.79
after addition of 0.1 mol
Assume this is in 1 Liter solution
so
mol of Acid formed = 1+0.1 = 1.1
mol of acetate reacted = 1.1-0.1 = 1.0
now
pH = 4.75+ log(1.0/1.1) = 4.71
B)
HCl reacts as follows:
NaAcetetate --> Na+ + Acetate-
Acetate- + H+ --> HAcetate
which is acetic acid
