Question

The following rate law has been proposed for the reaction 2A R + S, d[A]/dt = -k[A]^2/[R] Your goal is to test this rate law, and so you decide to run the reaction in a constant-volume batch reactor, initially charged with a known value of [A_o] and no R or S. The concentration of A is measured at periodic time intervals until the reaction is near completion. Propose a method you would use to test this rate law and explain why (one sentence should be sufficient). With the data in hand, what plot would you construct to test this rate law?

Explanation / Answer

The rate law can be tested using integral method since order of the reactino is known

given -dA/dt= K[A]2/R

-dA/[A2] = (K/R)*dt

1/A= (K/R)*t+C, C is integration constant. at t= 0 , [A] =[A]0 and R=0

hence 1/[A]o= C

hence 1/A = 1/AO+Kt/R

so a plot of 1/ A t gives slope of K/R and intercept 1/Ao
