Question

I need help figuring out how to set up the problems and why it was done that way, thank you. Sorry for the sideways upload, it wouldn't let me readjust it

5. Here are the masses of protons, electrons, and neutrons: Proton: m 1.6726x 1027 kg et total xtoo Electron: m -30 kg mass 0.9109x10 Neutron: m 1.6749x 10-27 kg above, calculate the Given the number of protons, electrons, and neutrons that you obtained following: Show your work. Expected mass of an atom of helium: Percent mass of the electron cloud in helium atom: Percent mass of nucleus in helium atom: 6. Repeat the same three calculations for cadmium. Expected mass of an atom of cadmium: Percent mass of the electron cloud in cadmium atom: Percent mass of nucleus in cadmium atom: 7. The mass of electrons are considered negligible when calculating the mass of an atom. Is this a correct assumption? Defend your answer. Cheen 24ALab WMF, Sp 17. Water

Explanation / Answer

The concept here is the

Total mass = sum of the mass of electron proton and neutrons in it .

Percent mass = (mass of a compound / total mass )*100

A.) Helium contains 2 electrons and 2 protons

Number of neutrons = mass number - number of protons

= 4-2= 2 neutrons

Expected mass = 1.67x10-27x2 + 0.9019x10-30x2 + 1.675x10-27x2

= 6.691x10-27

Mass of protons= 3.34x10-27 kg

Mass of neutrons = 3.3498x10-27 kg

Mass of electrons = 1.8218x10-30 kg

Percent mass of electron = mass of electron / expected mass

= 0.027%

% mass of nucleus = (mass protons +neutrons mass)/ expected mass

= (3.34+3.3498)x10-27/(6.691x10-27)x 100

= 99.9%

Similar calculations can be done for cadmium

taking

Number of electrons as 48

Number of protons as 48

Number of neutrons as 64

Repeat the same above calculations mentioned.
