Explanation / Answer

The osmoregulatory status of the juvenile bull sharks(Carcharhinus leucas) in freshwater and seawater . In fresh water the bull sharks were hyper-osmotic regulators. In sea water, bull sharks had significantly higher plasma osmolarities . So , we can conclude the bull sharks were actually hyper - osmotic in sea water. Plasma osmolytes concentrations were all significantly higher in bull sharks in case of sea water. Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase activity in the gills and intestine was less compared Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase activity in the rectal gland and kidney were significantly higher than gill and intestine . In Fresh Water and Sea Water, rectal gland Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase activity was 5.6+/-0.8 and 9.2+/-0.6 mmol Pi mg(-1) protein h(-1), respectively. Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase activity in the kidney of fresh water and sea water animals was 8.4+/-1.1 and 3.3+/-1.1 Pi mg(-1) protein h(-1), respectively. This is because the juvenile bull sharks have the osmoregulatory plasticity in Sea Water because they do not prefer seas where salinity is low and in order to avoid predators. Another reason may be the availability of food in abundance.
