Question

15 pts D Question 1. Using the approach/notation/data presented in lecture what is the predicted chemical shift of proton HA in ppm? Please provide just the numerical value, expressed with one decimal place, along with an asterisk if appropriate. Do not include units. D Question 2 1.5 pts using the approach/notation/data presented in lecture what is the predicted chemical shift of proton Ha in ppm? Please provide just the numerical value, expressed with one decimal place, along with an asterisk if appropriate. Do not include units.

Explanation / Answer

Question 1: For the Ha proton, the C is connected to CN, benzene ring and alkyl group. So, In total the increment will be (according to table) = 1.4+2.4+0.0 = 3.8 ppm. So, the chemical shift will be 3.8 ppm.

Question 2: For the Hb proton, the C is connected to N, S and alkyl group. So, In total the increment will be (according to table) = 1.2+1.2+0.0 = 2.4 ppm. So, the chemical shift will be 2.4 ppm.
